The RideTech 48 Hour Corvette Wins Goodguys Autocross National Championship! – Powered by Lingenfelter

Chris Smith driving the RideTech 48 Hour Corvette, Lingenfelter Powered has clinched the Goodguys Autocross National Championship. Chris and our (Ridetech) Corvette have placed 1st or 2nd in every Goodguys Autocross attended in 2017.
Smitty commented: “It’s great to see the results of our hard work over the past 3 years with this car and this program. I’m very honored to have the full support of my family and the entire RideTech team behind me for this achievement!”

Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Drag Race Results – Holley LS Fest 2017 Lingenfelter COPO Battle At The Green!

LINGENFELTER COPO BATTLE AT THE GREEN

Former NHRA national event finalist Emily Volkman drove her ’15 COPO Camaro to the Lingenfelter COPO Battle at the Green victory with a final-round decision over Brian Palcisko. Palcisko had the slightly better reaction time, but Volkman was closer to her dial with a 9.20 on a 9.17 dial opposite his fast-closing 8.92 on an 8.80.

With a consistent string of runs within just hundredths of a second of 9.20 all day, Volkman defeated Bowling Green’s Donnie Bray, recent NHRA divisional event winner Daren Poole-Adams, and, in the semifinals, Jim McLeod, who narrowly red-lighted. Poole-Adams paced all qualifiers with a .019 light. 1986 NHRA Stock world champion Al Corda was No. 2 with a .023, Holley Director of EFI Business Development Robin Lawrence was third with a .026, and Volkman was fourth with a .041.

Grand Champion, Autocross, & 3S Challenge Results Holley LS Fest 2017

After all the tire smoke from more than 1,200 cars and three days of non-stop action literally had cleared, Danny Popp walked off with the top prize, the Grand Champion crown. With a record crowd looking on – the biggest in the long history of Beech Bend Raceway Park – Popp drove his ’03 Corvette Z06 to victory by a wide margin (13 points) over another veteran of the LS Fest wars, Rich Wilhoff, who also finished in the runner-up position at the inaugural LS Fest West earlier this year in Las Vegas.

Popp came out on top in both QA1 Autocross events – one at Beech Bend Raceway Park and the other at NCM Motorsports Park – to earn the maximum possible Autocross points: 50. He finished second in the 3S Challenge and third in the Drag Race for a grand total of 92 points – just eight points shy of a perfect 100.

Driving an ’06 Corvette Z06, Wilhoff ruled the 3S Challenge and was second to Popp in both Autocross events but finished just 11th in drag racing for a total of 79 points. Joe Gregory was a distant third behind Wilhoff with 56 points, and Sam Strano narrowly edged out Ryan Mathews and Tyler Powell for fourth place overall.

Popp topped all challengers on the NCM Autocross track, winning with a time of 42.766 seconds, about a half-second faster than Wilhoff’s second-place time of 43.253. Strano, who finished fourth in the overall Grand Champion standings. Mike DuSold, Grand Champion of both the 2016 LS Fest and the 2017 LS Fest West in Las Vegas, was fourth, and Jack Stanford was fifth.

On the equally challenging Beech Bend Raceway Park Autocross course, Popp again emerged victorious, again over Wilhoff. This one was even closer – Wilhoff actually tied Popp right to the thousandth of a second with a time of exactly 31.107 seconds , the first time LS Fest officials have observed that in competition – but Popp won the tiebreaker (runoff combined time), 62.060 seconds to Wilhoff’s close 62.111. Stanford was about a half-second back with a 31.508, Strano was about a half-second behind Stanford with a 31.568, and Larry Woo rounded out the top five with a time of 31.657.

Wilhoff was second to no one at the Baer/Super Chevy 3S Challenge, registering a winning time of 22.262. He also took home the coveted Vette Magazine Fastest Corvette award. Popp was right on his heels at 22.515, and Logan Palmer’s ’11 Corvette was right behind him with a score of 22.756 seconds. Fourth place went to Bret Voelkel’s Camaro (22.844 seconds), and fifth-place honors went to Tyler Powell’s ’63 Corvette with a time of 23.035.

Sam Schmidt to Take on Mario Andretti at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

LONG BEACH, CA (April 8, 2017) – Former INDYCAR drivers Sam Schmidt and Mario Andretti announced today they will go head to head in a race next month at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Schmidt Peterson Motorsports co-owner and Indianapolis 500 legend will race semi-autonomous cars on the circuit’s 2.439-mile permanent road course on May 13 ahead of the INDYCAR Grand Prix.

Sam Schmidt, who is paralyzed from the neck down, will pilot the Z06 SAM Car, a semi-autonomous vehicle that global technology company Arrow Electronics modified for him. Sensors mounted on a high-tech headset the Las Vegas resident wears connect to infrared cameras mounted on the dashboard and detect his head-tilt motions to steer. A sip-and-puff device that Schmidt breathes into enables him to accelerate and brake. Voice commands enable Sam to switch gears and turn the SAM Car on and off. Andretti will use the same technology to drive an Arrow-modified Stingray SAM Car.

“It’s always exciting when I can get in this awesome car and go fast,” Schmidt commented. “However, this time will have extra meaning as I never had a chance to race against Mario during my driving career. He is a true legend that is world renowned and I appreciate his willingness to participate and showcase the next evolution of this technology.”

“Indianapolis has long been considered a test ground for automotive technologies, and Sam and the Arrow Chevy Corvette have continued to prove that, including a 150-mph run last year at IMS,” said Doug Boles, President of Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “Adding a match race between Mario Andretti, one of the most popular and talented drivers to ever compete at Indy, and Sam this May just takes the technology to the next level!”

This will be the first time two semi-autonomous cars have raced head to head. The legendary faceoff will benefit Conquer Paralysis Now, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization and a leading authority on spinal cord injury research and treatment founded by Schmidt. The Corvette Homecoming and Chevy Invitational,Inc. is an annual event held in Bowling Green, Kentucky celebrating America’s sports car, the Chevrolet Corvette. First held in 1981, it was created by two Corvette enthusiasts, Tom Hill and Sam Hall, in response to the assembly of Corvettes moving from St. Louis, MO to the Bowling Green Assembly Plant, which is currently the sole assembler of the car. In 2015 the Chevy Invitational was added to the event with great success.

The event features competitions in numerous judged shows for Corvettes and Chevys along with informative seminars. The Corvette Homecoming and Chevy Invitational,Inc. features numerous vendors, parade, National Corvette Museum tours, auto and memorabilia auction, live music, women’s events/vendors. The event offers an exclusive show called Sans Pareil (without equal) and Ultra Originals where the cars are at least 30 years old and 85% original. The event also has a Full Custom judged class. Climbing the Ladder – Dirk Stratton and his LS7-Powered #Driftvette

Holley’s LS Fest (link is external) is an event near and dear to our hearts. We attend every year for a chance to witness drag racing, autocross and drifting, all in one weekend and all cars featuring an LS or LT engine. This is where Dirk Stratton comes into the picture. Two years ago, at the 2015 Holley LS Fest, we saw a grey C6 Corvette ripping through the gears at Beech Bend Raceway with a trail of white smoke behind it and we were blown away. It was refreshing to see a Chevrolet chassis dominating in a motorsport series comprised almost solely of small Japanese cars, so we have been keeping our eyes on the driver, Dirk Stratton, ever since.

As it turns out, he has grown leaps and bounds since we last saw him at LS Fest. That year, in 2015, he won the Midwest Drift Union Championship which earned him a spot in the Formula Drift Pro2 series, only one tier below the big dogs of Pro1. He competed in the ‘16 season of Formula Drift (FD) and came in a very impressive 4th place in the overall series points which earned him the prestigious “Rookie of the Year” title.

Dirk is now positioned to compete in the FD Pro2 series again in 2017, although his “Rookie of the Year” title did earn him a license to compete in Pro1. “You know, I just think my team and I should compete another year in Pro2 in order to refine a few things and continue to grow. We hope to enter the Pro1 series in 2018 as a better team and I’m confident we can dominate,” Dirk told us.

So, within a matter of just a few years, Dirk climbed the ladder from the grassroots level of drifting to a professional level, competing alongside some of the best drifters in the world. We were intrigued to find out how he got here and how he progressed so quickly, so we gave him a call to learn more about his story.

Lingenfelter’s “Gen III” LT5 provides a glimpse of what might have been with the original King of the Hill

It’s difficult to overstate the significance of the C4 ZR-1 upon its introduction. In the years leading up to it, rumors swirled and grainy spy phots of a royally dubbed “King of the Hill” high-performance variant captured the imagination of countless enthusiasts. At a time when any new vehicle with more than 250 horsepower was virtually guaranteed the cover of an automotive magazine, this first-ever Corvette supercar promised to be a game changer.

When its extra-wide 315/35ZR17 Goodyear Eagle ZR rear tires finally lit up the pavement in 1990, the ZR-1’s exotic LT5 DOHC V-8 was hailed as a marvel of mechanical achievement, and its 375-horsepower output equaled that of the Ferrari Testarossa’s V-12. The engine was famously developed in a joint venture between Chevrolet and Lotus, and assembled by marine-engine manufacturer MerCruiser.

Chevrolet indeed made a statement that its flagship performer could run with the world’s best. Everyone agreed. Unfortunately, they didn’t exactly acknowledge it with their wallets. Despite an initial stampede for the first few cars off the line, demand for the roughly $30,000 ZR-1 option—applied on top of the $32-$37K tab (depending on model year) for a base C4 coupe—quickly waned.

Corvettes at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show

Our friends from Lingenfelter Performance Engineering also had two Corvettes on display.

First up is the Blue and White Superformance Grand Sport we saw last fall at SEMA. The Superformance Grand Sport is equipped with the Lingenfelter enhanced LS7 that offers just over 600 hp on tap.

However, it was the Lingenfelter Red Corvette Z06 that really got our interest up. For the second year in a row, Lingenfelter is offering a Ken Lingenfelter Signature Edition Series. The car features all the great aerodynamics and braking from the Z07 Performance Package plus LPE’s enhancements to boost performance of the car to 800 hp!
